We have to clean this mess up as soon as possible... Then I have deal with the real problem face-to-face... Damn, these next few months won't be much fun.
Shard let his troubling thoughts go as he prepared to give his final speech to the search party. The mass of people before him was about the size he had initially expected it would be: quite enough to split up and search effectively. The squirrel cleared his throat and spoke up, using his strong baritone voice to nearly its full potential, so that even those in the very back could hear him quite clearly.
"Now listen up! All of you!" He paused, letting the command hang in the air for a moment as silence came. He clasped his strong paws lightly behind his back and began to slowly pace back and forth, never taking his eyes off his audience as he continued, "I'm sure you are all aware of this, but today is a day of great importance! It cannot be stressed enough. I hope you're all ready for whatever's to come, be it for better or worse. We probably won't find any clues today, because we're searching to the West of here and other near places; the messengers should have taken the road back to the sea, but all possible avenues much be explored, and this one is the easiest, so it's best to get it out of the way first.
"Tomorrow we will begin the serious search; we will split up into a few groups to comb the path to the sea and its surrounding lands for information. Tonight, after the search, you can all return to your homes to sleep, if you wish. Or you can stay in the fort for the night. But starting tomorrow, we will all be on a long journey—that means we'll likely be camping in the wilderness for several days, if not more."
He finished among a few groans from already-bored youngsters in the back of the crowd, "Pack as lightly as possible! But be sure to bring enough provisions." He stopped pacing and looked the group over before saying his final piece: "That's all—Let's get to it!"
About half of the crowd, and Nido, who had remained silent up until that very moment, gave an enthusiastic cheer, which was echoed by some of the others, who probably weren't listening. The giant hare, towering above Shard, patted his friend on the shoulder as he walked toward the gate—sort of like a silent "good job, buddy." He knew that his friend hated giving speeches.
Shard hurried up to the head of the crowd, making eye contact with a few searchers that seemed to carry some sort of significance. Somehow, he thought, they carried with them a sense of experience that most in the large group (minus the Guardians themselves) did not. He knew that he would likely get to know some of these few during their journey together... He could only hope that they were better-tempered than the hulking wolverine Karka.
